One thing to Zuma Deluxe Games
I was looking to find a game I could play during my free time, especially when I was waiting on phone calls or for other things to load. I found Kung Fu Zuma without struggling through menus—it was right on the homepage. It loaded almost instantly, which was such a relief. Immediately after loading the game, I was greeted with a welcome screen that played really catchy music. The graphics were great from the start, and the two combined really enticed me to play the game.
The game’s objective is pretty clear from the beginning, even for first time players. Basically, you’re playing as a panda at the center of a maze-like structure. You start with a set number of lives, and each time you lose, one goes away. Different colored balls start funneling into the maze, and it’s your job to shoot different colored balls at the line of balls in order to match three or more. Once you’ve made a match, they disappear and you’re given a break from the movement of the balls for a brief amount of time. Some balls have extra characteristics, such as one carries a bomb on it, and when you match it, it blows up surrounding balls. Others cause the whole line to back up a little.
This may seem like a really easy game, but it’s actually pretty difficult. What exactly makes it difficult? Several characteristics of the game keep you from winning immediately. The path the balls are traveling on isn’t very long. This means you don’t have very long to linger on decisions you need to make before the balls reach the hole at the center of the maze. On top of that, there are a few mistakes I kept making. Instead of just shooting balls that weren’t useful to me into the sunset, I would either wait to use them, or add them to the front of my line. This makes no sense, and kept causing me to lose.
After several rounds of practicing and getting the hang of playing, I developed a useful strategy to finally beat the game. I fell into a rhythm and realized what tricks could help me. I also realized when the second character of the game was more likely to start shooting helpful balls my way—he tends to throw them after the ball chain reaches a certain length. This was really helpful because then I would target those and work my chain down very quickly.
One thing to watch out for is that if you lose, the next round starts right away. There’s no prompt screen that asks if you’d like to continue. Because of this, make sure that you’re ready to go as soon as you notice you’ve lost, or you’ll end up just losing another round really quickly. I like this aspect of the game a lot because it allows me to just quickly run through a few stages while I have a few extra minutes. The rounds are really fast, and so if I have a spare minute or two before I have to leave for work, I know I can play a few rounds of this game without wasting too much time. Getting hooked on it is another problem.
